Taming the Troublesome Child: American Families, Child Guidance, and the Limits of Psychiatric Authority

Taming the Troublesome Child: American Families, Child Guidance, and the Limits of Psychiatric Authority (Harvard University Press) by Kathleen W. Jones.

Those who do not learned from history are doomed to repeat it -- this dense highly academic text looks at the first 50 years of the twentieth century and how American psychiatry took over the role of expert on children from grandmothers and the family to no clear good. How blaming mothers for children's behavior covered up the social causes of poor behavior in children. Now we blame the children's brains. Tough read but some rewards.
