Why Have the Tricyclic and SSRI Antidepressants Both Failed to Help Children?

Medicating Our Children/A Warning About What the Doctor Ordered

At a two-day conference in Bethesda, Md., last week, a panel of experts recommended to the Food and Drug Administration that Prozac and other antidepressants be given a "black box" warning to their prescribing labels. Higher rates of suicidal thinking and behavior in the absence of any proof of effectiveness in treating childhood depression led to the panel's decision.
